INTANGIBLE CULTURAL HERITAGE · China
One story, one lamp
told for a thousand years
The Legend of Mulan · shadow play — two forms of heritage on the public lists, restaged at MULAN DIAN® as a language of the East.
She is not only a legend
she is a lineage officially remembered
- The Legend of MulanMulan Legend
National intangible cultural heritage, nominated jointly by Huangpi in Hubei and Yucheng in Henan — the histories never recorded where she was born, so every region kept her in its own way, and her story took root across mountains and rivers.
- Shadow playShadow Play
A masterpiece of the intangible cultural heritage of humanity. One hide, one lamp, two hands — in the age before cinema, this was how the Chinese cast their stories onto a screen.
- Home of MulanHome of Mulan
Yucheng in Henan has been named "Home of Mulan in China" by the Chinese Folk Literature and Art Association; in the Mulan Shrine at Yingkuo stands a stele from the second year of Yuantong (1334) of the Yuan dynasty, its three thousand and more characters recording Mulan's life.
- Named after herNamed After Her
Mulan Mountain, Mulan Lake and Mulan Tianchi in Huangpi, Hubei; Wanhua Mountain in Yan'an, Shaanxi — places named for her, scattered across half of China.
The two things
she ate
One in her pack, one on the table when she came home — in Mulan's story, two foods have never had names.
I
Dumplings
THE ONE IN HER PACK
The wrapper is the pack
the filling is the stove at home
In the snow and wind of the north, dough wrapped around filling was a home carried on the person. One bite, and the heat arrives before words — what she swallowed was not army rations, but a little warmth someone had folded for her.
Dumplings are food for a table of people
II
Tangyuan
THE ONE ON HER TABLE
The circle has no edges
and no first or last
On the day she put down her armour, round things were boiling on the stove. One pot of water at a boil, and all the rounds rose together — like a table of people waiting for one person to come home. The round is the shape of return, and the shape of the words "you are back, and that is enough".
Tangyuan is the shape of waiting for someone to come home
Later we put tea into these two things
leaves grown in the mountains, wrappers folded at home
the lamp she once kept now rests in a bowl
Note The above is a brand narrative by MULAN DIAN®, expressing product imagery and cultural provenance; it is not historical verification or a historical conclusion.

THE THOUSAND · A thousand at one table
A thousand at one table
sharing one heat
A thousand bowls, one pot · dumplings were born for a crowd
In Mulan's camp the loudest moment was not the muster — it was dinner
a thousand bowls, one pot
dumplings were born for a crowd
one pot of water warmed a whole camp
The heat under that lamp, back then — today we set it on your table
She kept a lamp
we bring the tea under it to the table
In the shadow play, what Mulan guards is a lamp. What MULAN DIAN® does is small, and long — turning the cup of tea beneath that lamp into four courses of tea food for the table. An Eastern IP, told on the screen and remembered in every bite.
